Professor Emeritus Takashi HIYAMA of Kumamoto University, former Director of IROAST, was awarded the title of IEEE Fellow for contribution to intelligent power systems, namely his outstanding achievements in the area of intelligent power systems with innovative applications of intelligent techniques such as rule-based systems, fuzzy logic control, fuzzy reasoning & inference, artificial neural networks, multi-agent systems, and their hybrid systems.

IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) is the world's largest technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity. The IEEE Fellow is one of the most prestigious honors of the IEEE, and is bestowed upon a very limited number of Senior Members who have contributed importantly to the advancement or application of engineering, science, and technology bringing significant value to our society. The number of IEEE Fellows elevated in a year is no more than one-tenth of one percent of the total IEEE voting membership.

In addition, he was awarded the Life Fellow status for his many years of service and contributions to the IEEE. The AAIA also recently conferred the title of Fellow on him as a top scientist with outstanding achievements in the area of intelligent power systems.

Dr. Hiyama reported the award to President Hisao Ogawa and expressed his gratitude for the award and his aspirations for the future as follows.

It’s my great pleasure to have international recognition for my research and achievements in the field of intelligent power systems with innovative intelligent techniques such as rule-based systems, fuzzy reasoning & inference, artificial neural networks, multi-agent systems, and their hybrid systems. Here, I would like to give my deepest gratitude to everyone involved in my research activities. Possibly, I would like to keep my contribution to this field and exchange ideas with other researchers, hopefully with young researchers. In addition, it’s also my great pleasure to be a Fellow of AAIA.
