(In UK-2) Visit to the School of Engineering, University of Glasgow

The University of Glasgow is the fourth-oldest university in the UK, a member of the Russell group (a group of public research universities in the UK) and has a wide international network. It has produced many well-known people in various fields including economist Adam Smith, engineer/inventor James Watt, surgeon Joseph Lister, seven Nobel Laureates, three British Prime Ministers, and the inaugural First Minister of Scotland. On July 1^st, Director Hiyama and Chief Manager Kumagai held a number of individual meetings with faculty members from the School of Engineering to discuss the possibility of future research collaborations. After the meetings, they were accompanied by Dean Kontis on a short tour of their world leading labs and facilities.

On the next day, Director Hiyama and Mr. Kumagai met with external relations staff. There, the University of Glasgow’s School of Engineering and Kumamoto University’s Institute of Pulsed Power Science concluded a faculty-based academic exchange agreement that began in 2014. Further discussions were had to exchange ideas about how to expand the current institution-only agreement into a larger agreement between the two universities for the purpose of opening more international exchange opportunities between Kumamoto University and the University of Glasgow.
