Ms. Sudhakar Kavya CHARI, a project intern at Centre for Cosmology and Science Popularization (CCSP), India, had been on a 8-week online internship organized by Professor Keitaro TAKAHASHI (IROAST International Joint Research Faculty Member) since November 1, 2024, and successfully completed the program on December 27, 2024. The program was conducted online only.
In this program, Ms. Kavya was engaged in research on pulsars, particularly on classifying pulsars based on radio observation data using machine learning method. First, she learned the basics about pulsars and machine learning, and investigated methods suitable for pulsar classification problems. Then, she actually applied the method called DBSCAN to archival data to classify pulsars. As a result of using four parameters, she showed that pulsars are classified into two groups, and she gave a physical interpretation based on the pulsar period and dispersion measure. She has been very active and passionate about her studies and research, and her results are highly commendable.
This internship was beneficial for her and we hope she will publish a paper summarizing the research results from this internship. She is likely to hope to enroll in graduate school in Kumamoto University, so we do hope to see her as a student in our university in the near future.
