Mr. Shofiyul Anam Ai MUBAROK, a a researcher at Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) in Indonesia completed his Hybrid Internship Program for 8 weeks, coordinated by Associate Prof. Kei ISHIDA (CWMD), an IROAST International Joint Faculty Member, and he received the certificate of completion from Director Kazuki TAKASHIMA on the last day of his program, January 10.
Mr. Mubarok focused on comparing deep learning methods for rainfall-runoff modeling during this internship. Given that his academic background is in computer science, he began by acquiring fundamental knowledge of hydrology. He collected observational data on rainfall, air temperature, and flow discharge and analyzed these datasets to investigate their relationships. Also, he learned the concept of watersheds. Subsequently, he implemented rainfall-runoff models using various deep learning architectures, including recurrent neural networks (RNNs), long short-term memory networks (LSTMs), gated recurrent unit networks (GRUs), and convolutional neural networks (CNNs), leveraging the downloaded observational data. Despite the brevity of the internship period, he demonstrated exceptional diligence and successfully developed these models within the limited timeframe.
He will be entering to Kumamoto University in April as a regular doctoral student, and we hope that the internship helped him prepare for that.
