2023年12月8日、椋木俊文教授（大学院先端科学研究部）が世話人となり、ジョアキーノ ビジアーニ教授（グルノーブル・アルプ大学（フランス）／IROAST客員教授）をお迎えし、第109回IROASTセミナーを開催しました。

ビジアーニ教授は、2003年に熊本大学で開催された国際会議以来、大谷理事・副学長、椋木教授と協力関係にあり、本学を訪問されたのは今回で4回目になります。

セミナーでは、ビジアーニ教授と彼の研究室のメンバーが取り組んでいるX線トモグラフィーや中性子トモグラフィーなどの研究やテクニックについて、動画を交えながらわかりやすく説明されました。

ビジアーニ教授の研究室には、博士課程で研究をしている熊本大学の学生を含め、若手研究者が多く、彼らの研究についての話は、参加した学生たちの将来の国際的な研究への挑戦を後押しするものとなりました。

On December 8, 2023, the 109th IROAST Seminar, organized by Prof. Toshifumi MUKUNOKI (FAST), was held with IROAST Visiting Professor Gioacchino VIGGIANI, Université Grenoble Alpes, France.

Prof. Viggiani has been collaborating with Executive Vice President OTANI and Prof. MUKUNOKI since the international conference held in Kumamoto University in 2003. This was the fourth time he visited our university.

In the seminar, Dr. VIGGIANI gave an informative explanation of the research and techniques, such as x-ray and neutron tomography, of which he and his laboratory members are engaging, including video clips.

His laboratory has many young researchers, including a Kumamoto University student who is now doing Ph.D. research in his lab, and his talk about their research was sure to encourage the participating students to take up the challenge of international research in the future.

　国際先端科学技術研究機構（IROAST）は、グルノーブルアルプ大学所属、ジョアキーノ ビジアーニIROAST客員教授による、第109回IROASTセミナーを下記のとおり開催いたします。興味のある方はどなたでもご参加いただけます。多くの皆さまのご参加をお待ちしております。

4.   演    題  (Title)： “Recent developments in laboratory testing of geomaterials, with emphasis on imaging”

5．概    要 (Abstract)：This talk will present a review of some recent technical developments and scientific accomplishments in laboratory experimental testing of geomaterials – with a special focus on imaging. In particular, I'll provide a few examples of studies using full-field techniques such as x-ray and neutron tomography. These two techniques have had a strong impact over the last two decades, and have allowed the understanding of the micro scale processes ultimately driving the behavior of geomaterials at the macroscopic scale. I will try to outline the broader impact that this panoply of techniques has had and is expected to have in geomechanics and geotechnics at large.
