1. Greeting from the Director

The International Research Organization for Advanced Science and Technology (IROAST) was established at Kumamoto University in 2016 with the objective of promoting international collaborative research in science and engineering, while enhancing the university’s global research capabilities. Since 2022, during its second phase of operations, IROAST has focused on key research areas aimed at contributing to the development of a well-being society. These areas include biomedical sciences, environmentally sustainable technologies, biological and environmental sciences, and resilience enhancement. Additionally, IROAST has actively supported young researchers with the potential to excel globally while advancing research in advanced materials and data science, including artificial intelligence.

IROAST has made a substantial contribution to strengthening Kumamoto University’s international profile. However, to further advance research across the university, IROAST will conclude its activities at the end of the 2024 academic year. Thereafter, its core functions and initiatives will be continued by the Faculty of Advanced Science and Technology, in collaboration with other relevant organizations, with the aim of promoting further international collaboration and research excellence.

This publication serves as the final activity report of IROAST, providing a summary of its activities during the 2024 academic year. Feedback and comments from readers would be highly appreciated. Finally, sincere appreciation is extended to all individuals and institutions that have contributed to the success of IROAST’s mission and activities throughout its years of operation.

国際先端科学技術研究機構（IROAST）は、熊本大学の理工系分野における国際共同研究の推進と国際研究力の強化を目的として、2016年に設置されました。 2022年からは活動の第2フェーズとして、Well-being社会の構築に貢献する重点領域（バイオ・医療、低環境負荷、生物環境学、レジリエンス強化）を設定し、これらの研究を支える先進材料やAIを含むデータサイエンスへの取組みを推進するとともに、将来、世界的に活躍が期待される若手研究者の支援にも力を注いできました。

IROASTは、本学の国際的認知度向上に大きく貢献してまいりましたが、全学的な研究力のさらなる強化を図るため、2024年度末をもってIROASTとしての活動を終了することとなりました。今後は、先端科学研究部をはじめとする新たな組織のもとで、その主要な活動を継承し、より一層の国際的な展開を進めて参ります。

本年次報告書は、IROASTとしての最後の活動報告として、2024年度の取り組みをまとめたものです。ぜひご一読いただき、ご意見やご感想をお寄せいただければ幸いです。最後に、これまでIROASTの活動にご支援、ご協力を賜りました皆様に、心より御礼申し上げます。
